Information we collect
Information you give us
If you contact us by email or through the contact form, we receive whatever you choose to send: typically your name, your email address, and the content of your message. We use it only to answer you. We do not add you to a marketing list, and we do not sell or rent it.
Information collected automatically
Like virtually every website, our server produces access logs. These may record your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, referring page, the pages you requested, and the date and time of the request. Logs are used for security, abuse prevention and diagnosing technical faults, and are retained for a limited period before deletion.
Cookies and similar technologies
A cookie is a small text file stored by your browser. We group the cookies used on this site into four categories:
- Functional / strictly necessary — required for the site to work and to remember your privacy choices. These do not require consent.
- Statistics — help us understand which guides are read and where readers get stuck, in aggregate.
- Marketing / advertising — used by advertising partners to select and measure ads.
- Preferences — remember display choices you make.
Full details, including individual cookie names and lifetimes, are listed in our Cookie Policy. Where the law requires it, non-essential cookies are only set after you consent through the banner, and you can change or withdraw that consent at any time.
Advertising
This site is funded by display advertising, which is what allows the cost research to be published without lead-generation forms or contractor referral fees.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and/or other sites on the Internet.
- You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info.
- For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, advertising partners operate under the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework, and personalized advertising is only enabled where you have consented.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate traffic patterns — which guides are found, from which search terms, and on which devices. Where consent is required, analytics is loaded only after consent, and IP addresses are handled in accordance with Google’s data processing terms. We never attempt to identify individual readers.
Legal bases for processing (GDPR)
- Consent — for statistics, preferences and advertising cookies where the law requires it.
- Legitimate interests — for server logs and security measures, to keep the site available and protected from abuse.
- Performance of a request — to answer messages you send us.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time. California residents additionally have the right to know what categories of personal information are collected and disclosed, and the right to opt out of any “sale” or “sharing” of personal information as those terms are defined by the CPRA.
We do not sell personal information for money. Where advertising partners process identifiers for cross-context behavioural advertising, you can opt out through the consent banner or the links above.

International transfers

Security
The site is served over HTTPS. Access to the administration area is restricted, rate-limited and protected by strong credentials. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures appropriate to the limited data we hold.
