SewerLine Lab publishes cost research. This page sets out, plainly, what that research can and cannot be used for.
Our numbers are there to tell you whether a quote is reasonable — they are not a quote, and no website can price a pipe it has not seen.
Informational purpose only
Everything published on this site is general information about residential sewer laterals in the United States. It is not professional advice, and it does not create a client relationship of any kind. It is not a substitute for an assessment by a licensed plumber, a certified sewer inspector, a structural engineer, or your municipal authority.
We do not perform or arrange work
NET STUDIO LLC is a publisher. We do not hold a plumbing licence, we do not carry out repairs, we do not inspect properties, and we do not refer, recommend, rank or dispatch contractors. We take no referral fees, no lead payments and no commission on any job. Our revenue comes from display advertising, which is why we can publish figures that a lead-generation site could not.
How to read our cost figures
- They are ranges, not prices. A range means most jobs of that description landed between those two numbers. Yours can legitimately fall outside it.
- They are dated. Each figure carries a survey date. Construction pricing moves; a figure from last quarter is a reference point, not a current tariff.
- They are normalized. To compare markets, we reduce jobs to comparable units — cost per foot, by depth band and method. Real invoices bundle costs differently.
- They exclude the unpredictable. Unless stated, ranges do not include permit fees, unexpected rock or utility conflicts, asbestos-cement pipe handling, landscaping and hardscape restoration, interior finishing after an indoor dig, or municipal tap fees.
The correct use of a range is diagnostic: if three quotes sit inside it and one sits far outside, you now know which conversation to have.
The calculator
The cost calculator is a modelling tool. It multiplies a length by a per-foot band and a depth coefficient. It knows nothing about your soil, your access, your city’s permit regime, the condition of your pipe, or what is sitting on top of it. Its output is an order of magnitude to argue from, not an estimate to sign.
Regulation is local
Responsibility for the sewer lateral, point-of-sale inspection requirements, backflow prevention rules, permit obligations and who may legally perform the work all vary by state, county and city — sometimes between neighbouring towns. Where we describe a rule, we describe the general pattern and cite examples. Always confirm with your own municipality before relying on it.
Insurance and financial matters
Where we describe what homeowners policies and service line endorsements typically cover, we are describing common market practice, not your policy. Only your policy document and your insurer can tell you what you are covered for. We are not licensed insurance advisers and we do not recommend, compare or sell any insurance product, warranty or service contract.
Health and safety
Raw sewage is a biological hazard. Excavation near buried utilities is dangerous and, in most of the United States, legally requires a utility locate request before digging. Confined spaces kill. We deliberately do not publish step-by-step instructions for work that should be done by a trained professional with the right equipment. If you are facing an active backup, contamination or a suspected gas issue, stop reading and call a professional.
Advertising
This site displays third-party advertisements. We do not select, vet or endorse the advertisers who appear, and their presence is not a recommendation. Editorial content is independent of advertising, and no advertiser sees or influences our figures before publication.
External links
We link to standards bodies, municipal codes, manufacturers and other publications so our work can be checked. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy or availability of any external site.
Errors
We correct mistakes. If you believe a figure, a rule or a claim on this site is wrong, write to
with the page and, if possible, a source. Material corrections are noted on the page itself.
